Margaret Drabble was one of my mother's favorite writers. When I was in college, I did read one of her books, but can't remember it, not even the title. I'd like to read more of my mother's favorite modern authors, because at the time she would be reading them – Anita Brookner, Jean Rhys, etc., — I was more or less a knucklehead (I might still be for all I know); however, I would like recommendations for a book by any of those three writers. I realize now that my mother had excellent taste, and was a writer herself, and it has taken me a long time for her writerly spirit to enter my world, but now it would be great since I could explore these writers, and at the same time, perhaps get some insight into my mother's "world" as well.

What a beautiful way to connect with your mother’s memory through her favorite books. For Jean Rhys I’d definitely start with “Wide Sargasso Sea” – it’s her most famous work and gives you this haunting backstory to Jane Eyre that will stay with you forever. Your mom clearly had amazing taste in literature, these are all such thoughtful, introspective writers
