So basically as the title states. I recently lost my partner of 10 years very suddenly and unexpectedly. I don't really read self-help books so I think I'm looking for something with a bit more plot, a story behind it. I also love history so was looking at maybe Jackie Kennedy biographies? I also have Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking on my list, and Frankenstein bc it has to do with grief.

    1. Maybe try the Mrs. Pollifax books? They’re light-hearted (adventure-comedy, with the early ones heavy on the comedy), but with very well-observed, human characters. She’s a widow who’s lost her zest for life, so livens things up be applying (in person) for work for the CIA. It’s worth starting with book 1, “The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax” (by Dorothy Gilman).

    2. You might like Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter. The main character is a widow, and I felt like the book’s treatment of her love for her husband was great. There is a romantic subplot in which she finds love again, but it fully honors her marriage and memories of her husband and how they both inspire her (to help cats and people) and sometimes hold her back (because she’s afraid to let them recede).
