Some examples that I liked are An Untamed State by Roxane Gay, Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen. Not fussy about the country or themes, as long as it's not just 'the protagonist's life is super hard because the country is war-torn and poor'. By 'modern day' I mean post-1950s-ish as opposed to historical fiction.
Also open to suggestions where the author and/or main character aren't from that country, as long as they're well written and about that specific place (e.g. The Quiet American by Graham Greene) and not just like, generic thriller set in exotic location.
Thanks for any suggestions!
