Not super surprising. Luckily you can find cheap ereaders online, and even new Kindles aren’t that expensive.

Stuff like this is why I decided to spring for a Kobo instead of a Kindle.

    3. I mean I guess I get it but man that fucking sucks. I’ve been meaning to switch to another e reader as I got mine a few years ago but lately I’ve been just… not a fan of Amazon. So this may be another push for me to do so

The enshittification continues. Glad I binned my kindle a few years back.

Why would anyone buy books through Kindle? If anything just “find” the book online and find the author and mail them the cost of it to feel no guilt. 1. You are helping the author much more than they would through kindle 2. Screw these big corporations thinking they get to control our lives.

    6. That’s fine. I don’t put my books on there that way anyway. I connect it to my pc with a USB and manually import them with Calibre.

    7. Ugh, planned obsolescence at work. At first it looked as if the headline was “Starting in May, Kindles Won’t Be Able To…”

I removed the drm from all of my Amazon books before they killed download and transfer with USB functions from within the store. I’ve got a kindle I still use and a kobo I use more – neither ever connect to the internet anymore. I’m never buying again from any company that doesn’t let me download unencumbered files.

How does one check how old their Kindle is? I bought mine used a while back

    10. planned obsolescence in action. Time people start hacking their Kindle ereaders methinks to allow them to keep working with new books.

Hey there’s a kick-ass piece of software called Calibre you should know about. It’s free.

I’ve been using a Kindle from this era for some time and this change doesn’t affect me at all because I use Calibre.

      What the fuck

Edit; so if they’re just cutting it off from the kindle store, would they still be able to receive books from Libby?

My old kindle hasn’t touched an internet connection in years because of shit like this lol.

Wait, can you not sideload books though? I’d think you could simply transfer files physically via a usb cable.

My jailbroken Kindle is just there to borrow library books. Works great, Amazon sucks.

    16. Look into koreader! I’ve been using it on my PW1 for a year or two and it’s amazing, lots of added features that don’t exist on Kindle (at least not on my old one)

Okay, time to fill up the old Kindle with as many books as it will hold. I don’t use it often. I mainly read on the Kindle app on a Samsung tablet. Works great.

I saw a post on Reddit yesterday asking “Is planned obsolescence a real thing?” and I’m kinda jealous of someone who got this far without noticing yet that it definitely is
