    Looking for something different!

My book club is all women teachers ages 22-60. It’s a social group that meets outside of work, so no content restrictions. We read a lot of contemporary romance, mysteries and historical fiction.

I’d really like to bring something different to the table next month and challenge them with something they might not naturally gravitate too.

Thinking Sci-Fi, last 5ish years with strong female characters but open to other suggestions. I wondered about chain gang all-stars?

Been reading a lot more since my breakup and Chain Gang All-Stars is brutal but incredible – definitely fits what you’re looking for. The female characters are complex and the world-building hits hard without being too heavy in the tech stuff.

If your group wants something slightly less intense, maybe check out The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo? I know it’s not sci-fi but it surprised me how much depth it had beyond the glamorous surface. Project Hail Mary could work too – it’s got this really accessible approach to sci-fi that doesn’t feel intimidating, and the problem-solving elements might appeal to teachers.

Actually, now that I think about it, Klara and the Sun by Ishiguro might be perfect middle ground – it’s literary but with AI themes, and the emotional core is really strong.
