The Snow Queen series by Joan D. Vinge. This author has a degree in anthropology.
The Culture series by Iain M. Banks. I like to imagine this is what the future of Le Guin’s Hainish cycle might be like. Similar to the Hainish cycle, you can read them in any order.

Maybe Ancillary Justice, and the rest of the Imperial Radch trilogy, by Ann Leckie. It has that what I believe to be Le Guin esque quality of you not knowing exactly what’s happening all the time; you have to wait for a lot of answers.
