Okay bear with me here — I like many right now am a bit obsessed with Project Hail Mary. I read the book and I’ve seen the movie twice. I love it so much. And I was considering Ryan Gosling’s other roles and realized some of his other characters have a similarity, they struggle with the fact they lack agency outside of the “greater cause” and have no identity. You have the Driver in Drive, K in Blade Runner 2049, Ken in Barbie, and of course my precious Ryland Grace remembering how he came to be on the Hail Mary.
As a woman I’d like to read more stories like this because I find it nice and refreshing to read from a man’s perspective. Women are constantly losing their autonomy irl and being told to sacrifice themselves, especially if it’s for children.
I’d prefer fantasy/scifi because I think these genres work with this request but I’m open to others. Bonus points is the characters are kinda “whumpy”, big ole whump fan here.
I know about Murderbot, not interested in Brandon Sanderson books.
