I’m looking for novels where anger or resentment gets channeled into long-term, obsessive self-transformation.
The Count of Monte Cristo is basically my ideal: someone who gets destroyed, then spends years deliberately rebuilding themselves around a goal. There’s luck involved, sure, but the focus is on sustained effort, planning, and identity change.
I finished The Stars My Destination last night, which had some fun moments, but I’m looking for something more intense and psychologically vivid, maybe even a bit unhinged.
What I’m specifically trying to find is stories where the transformation process is central and detailed—training, discipline, planning, and a gradual shift in identity over time. Not just revenge plots where things happen quickly or mostly off-page.
Any recommendations?
