Looking to dive into a long series, preferably one that has 5 books or more. I like ongoing/serialized narratives but open to more episodic instalments as well. Open to most any genre really – fantasy, scifi, historical fiction, mystery, thrillers, horror and whatever else. No smut or romantasy though.

Also not looking for each book to be overly long – ideally they’d be between 300-400 pages and max 500.

Some examples of similar series I enjoyed: Discworld, Michael Connelly‘s Harry Bosch novels, The Last Kingdom series by Bernard Cornwell.

    Any suggestions?

    1. ed mcbain’s 87th precinct. 50+ books, initially shorter than 200 pages, longer as time went on but never more than about 400. episodic with overarching character stories and some returning criminals and such. if you like crime/mystery, it’s a must-read.

and for something similar to connelly there’s john sandford.

Re: Michael Connelly – have you read his Lincoln Lawyer and Renee Ballard books? In kind of that vein, I’d recommend the following series:

      Walt Longmire by Craig Johnson

      Alex Delaware by Jonathan Kellerman

Dave Robicheaux by James Lee Burke

Edit: Adding Myron Bolitar by Harlan Coben because I have been into those lately

    3. Aubrey-Maturin by O’Brian. 20 books. Straddles the line of literary and historical fiction. Amazing characters and possibly the most accurate fictional portrayal of the Napoleonic era. Little heavy on the nautical terminology but you can mostly ignore it until you get it and there are a few scenes where a seaman explains things to a landlubber that help a lot. Most volumes are less than 400 pages and are self contained story arcs. Can’t recommend it highly enough.

The Blackwater saga by Michael McDowell, is 6 book series, southern gothic family epic “horror”
Is not like gore horror, more like atmospheric dread & the uncanny. The family dynamics & character development are the core here & extremely well written.

The audiobooks are really good too.

The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells

The Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire

The Penric and Desdemona series by Lois McMaster Bujold

All three of those are made up of a series of novellas so each book is short.

The Pendergast series from Preston and Child is my favorite.

The Grishaverse series from Leigh Bardugo was also incredibly enjoyable.

CS Forresters Horatio Hornblower series. Great fun, and sort of an inspiration for Captain Kirk!

If you’re open to reading fantasy, you might try The Penric and Desdemona series by Lois McMaster Bujold. Most of the books are novella length, but the series is fairly long. The series begins with Penric’s Demon.
