Looking for dark fantasy books where romance is not the central device for moving the plot forward. That's not to say that there can't be romance at all, but not interested in HEA or HFN. Bonus points for morally complex characters, TRAUMA, dry humor/witty protag, and found family.

The Dead Cat Tail Assassins by P. Djeli Clark
Maybe “Pan’s Labyrinth” by Cornelia Funke and Guillermo del Toro. Not sure if it counts.
Clive Barker has written a bunch for you to choose from
Between Two Fires by Christopher Buelhman. Has found family, a witty protagonist, and no romance.
Have you read JONATHAN STRANGE & MR NORRELL?
