My favorite book is A Personal Matter by Kenzaburō Ōe and my favorite author is Yukio Mishima (I also like Murakami), but non-Japanese suggestions are certainly welcomed. I also enjoy Camus, David Foster Wallace, Dostoevsky, Jose Saramago, Kafka… if anyone here plays video games, my favorite game is Disco Elysium if that helps for recommendations. Recent books I’ve read and enjoyed were Piranesi and The Secret History.
Basically, I tend to like intricate stories with a psychological focus. The protagonist is usually deeply flawed and the narrative is granular but explores deep, fundamental/existential themes. Mysteries are a bonus.
Also, I just like books that remind you of nighttime. Whether it’s because they take place during night, have a dark element to them, or whatever. So drop those books too please 🙂
