Nonfiction books about the Polynesian transition from traditional beliefs to LDS (not written or backed by the church)?

I am very interested in learning the history of how many Polynesians converted to the LDS faith, but all I can find are books endorsed or marketed by the LDS church. I'm not just looking for a book to bash the church, but I want something more objective and more informative about pre-LDS faith and culture.
