I love the idea of places having a soul and a will of some sort.
My favorite examples of this are Area X in {Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer}, Starling House in {Starling House by Alix E. Harrow}, Cabeswater in {The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater}, and the Leszy's manor in {Where the Dark Stands Still by A. B. Poranek}.
They're all entities trying to connect with the characters more or less successfully with limited means or understanding of how to do so.
I particularly liked Cabeswater, which is ultimately benevolent but unintentionally frightening and limited by its own rules.
Please suggest more of that! I don't care which genre or what kind of environment it is.
I've already read Mexican Gothic, What Moves the Dead, and have Keeper of Enchanted Rooms in my TBR.
