Hi, I’m looking for books with monsters in them. I‘m not the biggest fan of horror so it’s hard to find the kind of books I like when perusing. I’m more interested in creative monsters—not like vampires, werewolves, zombies, dragons. Sort of unique, creepy ones like in the movie The Host or the show Sweet Home. Mythological monsters are always welcome too.
I do also like books to have at least a little bit of romance. Doesn’t have to be the main theme, but a little sprinkling. I don’t care one way or another if there’s “spice”.
I recently read Sorcery and Small Magics and really loved it, the monsters were both scary and sympathetic. Guillermo Del Toro vibes are always a +++. I DON’T like monster/human books, though, which is all I get when I look things up.
It’s okay if the book is scary, I just don’t like a bloodbath. Adult is preferred, YA is fine, and middle grade is okay, but I probably read every single middle grade monster book as a kid. I do majorly prefer third person as well—I will still read first person but I just really love that Jane Austen free indirect discourse style.
(Also I have read the major monster series’ like the Witcher and LOTR—all good books but I’ve already them all. And read the middle grade stuff too like PJO—but if it has come out in the last 10ish years maybe not.)
