I’m looking for fantasy with all the usual world-building & cool concepts, but written more like a thriller than a traditional fantasy.
What I mean:
- Fast-paced, "page-turners."
- high tension & high stakes
- Plot-driven. Not the slower, dense prose which many fantasy series can get bogged down with.
I’ve read a lot of fantasy and thriller separately, but I’m struggling to think of any examples for my question. Maybe… I suppose the closest example is The Warded Man (from Demon Cycle), because it has that constant danger, but set in a fully fleshed-out fantasy world.
Trying to avoid:
- Super dense & overly descriptive text (purple prose).
- Books that are character introspection with light plot. heavy on exposition, light on action.
Would love any recs which you think has that page-turner energy inside a fantasy setting. The more magic the better!
Editing to add examples that just remembered, and fit my request: Tales from the Gas Station by Jack Townsend. The Rook by Daniel O'Malley. God Eater series by Rob J Hayes.
