I want to read nonfiction books about the adventures of research vessels in the North Atlantic during the late 1950s, specifically those around Iceland. What were they studying? What kinds of staff did they have on hand? What was daily life like? What were the ships' layouts? The technology on board? The ocean? I'm especially interested in ships that might have used manned submersibles in some capacity.

Fiction would be fine if it were realistically depicted.

For context, I'm writing science fiction where a midcentury research vessel discovers fascinating structures on the sea floor. I don't know what sonar would look like. I don't know jack about ships. I've researched ships for a while now and I feel like I haven't connected a single dot. Research has been oddly difficult as well: either I'm not using the right terms or I'm not looking in the right places. Technology has also changed a great deal very quickly and I don't want to make a science fiction vessel that is too advanced for the era. So any and all help for contextualizing ship life and sailor behavior/daily life/job skills would be appreciated, as well as any archives on the subject.
