After spending most of my life not enjoying reading, I have in the last few years found a niche sub genre that really pulls me in – narrative history around exploration (particularly polar but anything will do!)

I’ve just finished The Wide Wide Sea by Hampton Sides which I loved. Other favourites have been:

    • The Wager, David Grann
    • The Worst Journey In The World, Apsley Cherry-Garrard
    • Endurance, Alfred Lansing,
    • Erebus, Michael Palin

A lot of people in boats having a bad time, landing their boats and still having a bad time.

I’d like to explore other perspectives of the same time period (Spanish, Portugese, Dutch, whatever). I really enjoyed how The Wide Wide Sea tried to present a more realistic/unbiased account (to the extent possible) of the effects of these voyages on/interactions with native populations.

    excited to hear recommendations 🙂
