I want to read a truly nuanced and non-cliche book where you’re not sure what may or may not be real – As in, the narrator is in some crazy situation but due to their family history, personal history, or some other reason, there’s tension about what is or isn’t real.

The tropes of “oh, they’re crazy!” Or “it was all a dream” are poorly done 99% of the time. What book(s) actually hold this tension without it being a cop-out?

    1. Warren Ellis ‘The Gun Machine.’ May or may not fit the bill. The MC’s reality is very real to him. Reader wonders if it’s reincarnation or some kind of time slip.

    2. Honestly, pretty much anything by Paul Tremblay if you enjoy horror (I wouldn’t call his books scary tho), but his novel Horror Movie is pretty good at making you wonder if something really is going on or if the mc is losing it.
