I am in a reading slump. Not necessarily because of my willingness to read ,but because of my painfully high standards of writing. I can’t seem to read a book that satisfies my needs of a rich romance like “The Song of Achilles”. I hate to be this pretentious, but most modern romances feel too “in your face”. It’s almost like authors believe that their readers are dumb and unable to read subtext ,or that they are under a misconception that all readers want to read intense smut every other scene.
I want a book with memorable, gut wrenching quotes ,and a plot that moves with romance. Most importantly, as Neil Gaiman (Author of “good omens” another one of my books that are helping me through this wretched reading slump) has stated… if two characters need a kiss to be in love, they were poorly written (something along those lines, it was much better said by an author).
