I've struggled a lot to find stuff to read that isn't nonfiction lately. I love fiction but I've gotten really picky about it. Not by choice, it just happened. I've read a bunch of fiction in the last few years and a lot of it just didn't do much for me. I want something older, i.e. something that maybe isn't all that well-known or popular today but has stood the test of time. In the vein of something by Ursula LeGuin, something thoughtful, compelling, with ideas.
The last book I read that I really got into was Ancillary Justice. Combined with LeGuin's sort of types of sci-fi and maybe what I want is complex worldbuilding, characters with agency, and something to say that won't make me bummed out. And preferably not literary-fiction masquerading as science fiction. I like literary fiction but that's not what I'm looking for right now. I want someone who's thought deeply about the machinery of the world they've built.
They don't necessarily have to be older but I want to get books from the library and stuff with a wait list isn't available now. Also I'm finding it tough to read a lot of contemporary stuff, at least for now.
Any thoughts?

C. J. Cherryh’s Alliance-Union universe! She is prolific enough that that should keep you occupied for a good while.
Neal Asher, I think he may have aged out of writing good books. But He has written a lot, Start with transformations.
