My husband is wanting to get more into reading for fun. Currently all of his reading is done at work so it’s real dry and technical. As a kid he really enjoyed: Jurassic Park, Hatchet, Congo… He loves outdoorsy books (Into Thin Air). He’s open to any genre.

Endurance by Alfred Lansing is an all-timer.
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry takes place mostly outdoors, another all timer.
Bill Bryson wrote a non-fiction account of hiking the Appalachian Trail – A Walk in the Woods. It’s older but worth the read
Nick Offerman (Ron Swanson) has written a few books that may appeal to your husband.
He may like The Martian – it’s mostly on Mars but has that outdoorsy fix-it ethos in spades.
Anything by Bill Bryson. Also Matterhorn- a book about the Vietnam War is really good.
Indian Creek Chronicles by Pete Fromm is a fantastic, introspective, outdoorsy memoir.
For fiction, I highly recommend Peter Heller. He writes a combination of suspense and mystery but always with very outdoorsy themes and settings. Plus his writing style is pretty unique.
River of Doubt by Candice Millard, about Roosevelt’s ill-fated expedition down an unmapped portion of the Amazon.
From another outdoorsy person – The Last Season by Eric Blehm was a fascinating true story. Also, someone else already mentioned it, but another vote for Endurance by Alfred Lansing.
Born to Run by Christopher McDougall
The Dog Stars
I’d suggest Outsider by Brett Popplewell. The true story of an aging hermit living in the mountains of BC who runs ultramarathons. Super compelling! Somewhat reminiscent of Into the Wild.
The Revenant
A River Runs Through It
Atlas of a Lost World or anything else by Craig Child.
