I’ve been reading a ton of Joan Didion lately and I LOVE how she captured the feeling of California in the 60s. It’s atmospheric, but also so grounded in real stories. I can’t get enough.

BUT I am from Virginia, and I’m dying to read something that feels in this vein but is more familiar to me. Anyone know of writers of essays, novels, memoirs that capture specific feelings of places along the east coast or in the south, in any time period?

I know Didion is a singular voice, but I would love to hear of anyone who may even slightly remind you of her.
