I read more this year that I have ever before. I consumed books. I have discovered my favorites this year.
Early in the year I was on a science kick and read about ten books on geology, ecology, and fossils in March. Then I started getting more heavily into classic lit., although I must note I have been a classic lit. reader all my life. I have always had unique disposition and sort of disconnection when it comes to contemporary novels. Perhaps, I’ve not tried reading the right ones.
When I started with it this year, I read a handful of Shakespeare and… Jesus, it’s hard to remember what I was reading then. I read *Faust*, which I highly enjoyed. I read *Night* by Elie Wiesel; I also really enjoyed this book. I really cannot remember what order I read these books in, but here is a list of all I remember reading this year:
Merchant of Venice
Hamlet
Tempest
Faust
Raisin in the Sun
Night
Nineteen Eighty-Four
Animal Farm
The Great Gatsby
Frankenstein
Steppenwolf
Dracula
East of Eden
Brave New World
Siddhartha
The Grapes of Wrath
The Communist Manifesto
The Stranger
The Myth of Sisyphus
The Plague
Candide
The Martian Chronicles
The Time Machine
Dialogues of Plato
The Epistles of St. Paul
I’m sure there’s many slipping through the cracks of my tired mind, but these I recall currently. Of course, for every one book I have read I have acquired a dozen. I’ll end with a question: did you read any books this year that were so good you read them twice in one year? I experienced this with two books: Nineteen Eighty-Four and Steppenwolf.
