I borrow lots of books on Libby where I just dip a toe in. With a 49hr length, plus it being a romance (50yo guy who isn’t into that) plus it having all kinds of blatant racist narrative, I didn’t think I’d stick it out.
But really good books put you in a time and space and head space that you just can’t quite imagine.
There’s some seriously, seriously racist bullshit the author says. I mean, there were points where I was asking myself what the fuck I was doing. But it was still worth it.
It got me thinking about modern politics and Trump, and how people justify really horrible ideas because their own way of life is threatened.
It’s been read by more Americans than anything butthe Bible, so it’s importance is undeniable.
And of course Scarlet is one of the most unique and interesting and venal women I’ve ever read.
If you like classics and have similarmisgivings, give it a try. It’s just an amazing journey that will leave you changed.
