I am a 27 female and in desperate need of adult book recommendations. I grew up loving YA but am growing out of it. I find every time I try reading an adult book I’m severely disappointed with it. I feel like part of it is me being too critical with authors but also books being turned out in a fast fashion way. I find myself cringing at a lot of dialogue in adult books because it is either forced dialogue (telling me characters are friends instead of showing me) or try hard vulgar dialogue. (I don’t have a problem with vulgar when it makes sense, is actually funny, or adds to the vibe). I also find myself frustrated by the lack of creativity in current writing. Every fantasy book with romance feels like a knock off of the ACOTAR formula. The contemporary chick lit feels shallow when I try. And the stuff that has substance is for super adult plots I can’t relate to quite yet (married in the burbs, kids, etc.) I’ve provided some ideas of books I like and don’t like below. Any recommendations are appreciated. I loovveee books that are written well, in third person POV, and/or have plot twists or great character development. I don’t like reading books that sacrifice/weaken side or male characters to strengthen the central (usually female) character (looking at you JLA).
