I have a hard time picking up random books because the titles make me judge them before I can even pick them up. However, I am so glad I fought that bad habit recently and picked up “Helldivers” by Nicholas Sansbury Smith.

I can’t say enough for this author. He’s taken the old standby dystopian life after disaster trope and made it interesting and worth reading. Im hooked on the whole series.

Mr. Sansbury Smith has a beautiful way of building this world and getting you invested. His settings are intricate and vividly described to the point where you feel like you know everything about the environment without over doing it or wasting words. You can close your eyes and be there in your mind.

The conflicts have depth and weight. This isn’t just a “struggle to survive” kind of dystopian series. It’s more along the lines of an examination of humanity after being put into a situation. The conflicts hold weight and deal with politics, morals, grit, determination, love , loss, empathy, and respect. It’s more than just surviving. It’s about living.

I have been constantly impressed and delighted by the authors deft talent of character building. Not just on the main characters. These books have a full and ever growing cast of a variety of characters. Each one is so well crafted you feel that you have a relationship with them all. You will at least have an investment in each effortlessly.

The storylines fly by easily despite the plethora of information you are given. It all comes together so seamlessly as you read the pages basically turn themselves.

If you like post apocalyptic reading, this series is a must read, in my humble opinion. There are 10 books in the series. So taking on the series is a commitment. I believe it is an investment that pays out well with enjoyment. Give it a shot and let me know if you agree.
