Peter Mayle’s A Year in Provence really brought that area to life to me, just so much interesting local color and customs and food, not at all a “travel guide” but rather a travel/memoir. I also really liked Iron and Silk by Mark Salzman (China), Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes (Italy) and Driving Over Lemons by Chris Stewart (Spain).
