I’ve read too many books about climate change, health crises and the evils of capitalism recently, and it’s made me sad. Any recommendations to cheer me up? It can be as silly or as profound as you like.

Humankind by Rutger Bregman. It’s a bit dense at times but his basic argument is that we’re really cynical about the human race and how evil we can be, but a lot of that evil is overstated and a lot of the studies or cases that are held up as textbook examples are actually deeply flawed (e.g. the Stanford Prison Experiment). It also covers a lot of science, philosophy and sociology on why the human race is kinder than we tend to think. I found it a really optimistic and hopeful book even though it does get into some dark territory at times (usually to debunk it).
