I’ve been getting back into reading since a really long hiatus during late high school and all of college. I was an avid reader during my middle and high school years but got a bit burnt out from YA books so I stepped away. Now that I’m returning to reading I’m finding a lot of popular books now aren’t really my cup of tea either. Does anyone have good recommendations for good fantasy and sci-fi books? I have a bit of a preference for sci-fi and also take dystopian books as well. My preferences aren’t set in stone though, feel free to recommend things that might not quite fit them as long as you tell me. Than you!

    What I’m looking for:
•worldbuilding with attention to detail and unique ideas
•(for fantasy specifically) worlds that draw inspiration from cultures other than just medieval Europe
•books that deal with traveling and adventures
    •books with some political intrigue.
•books that have creatures, aliens, and dragons.
•well written and interesting female characters.
•If the book has magic I want it either explained or at least grounded. I get annoyed when people can do almost anything with their powers with no repercussion.
•I’m open to both escapist books and books for deep thinkers, I like both depending on my mood.
•books of any age are fine. I’ll read children’s to adult books if I find them interesting enough!
•I will take comic, manga, and graphic novel recommendations as well!
•I’m open to both popular and more obscure books. I love finding hidden gems!
•this isn’t required but I’d love book recommendations with diverse characters. Stuff such as POC and LGBT representation would be a bonus for me.

    What I’m not looking for:
•romance heavy books or romantasy. Romance is ok if it’s a side plot but books focused completely on romance are really boring to me. I’m more interested in worldbuilding.
•books that are literally just erotica. Mentions and non explicit short scenes or fade to black is fine but if the book has pages upon pages of hardcore sex I’m not going to be interested. I’m asexual and don’t really like reading that stuff.
•fantasy books that are completely medieval European. This is just a personal preference, I don’t really like the aesthetic.

    Books I like:
The hunger games, the golden compass, the Star Wars Heir to the Empire trilogy, Dune, Warrior Cats, Wings of Fire, Guardians of Ga’Hoole, The City of Ember, and Hitchhicker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I’ve also read a bit of Priory of the Orange Tree. I haven’t finished it but I liked it so far.

    Books I dislike:
The Mortal Instruments, the Divergent Trilogy, the First Harry Potter book, and 1984 :(.
