*Bound for Canaan* by Fergus Bordewich is about the underground railroad during the civil war. The book is full of black American badasses.

{{Master Slave Husband Wife}} was the greatest nonfiction page turner I’ve ever read, and it’s about couple who escape slavery by train with the woman disguising herself as a disabled white man travelling with “his” slave, eventually ending up on the abolitionist speaking circuit with Frederick Douglas and Henry Box Brown and moving to the UK. Their story is genuinely incredible.
