Not looking for another *Hunger Games* – I’m not really sure how to describe what I’m looking for. Some that I’ve read that come to mind as I type (not all sci fi):
*Handmaid’s Tale* and *The Testaments* by Atwood were great of course.
*The Stars Are Legion* by Kameron Hurley is an action-packed grimdark standalone space opera that I enjoyed, though I’m not much for hard action novels.
I also just read *The Girl With All The Gifts* by Mike Carey, really enjoyed that for the weirdness and poignancy.
*Room* by Emma Donoghue sort of comes to mind as well even though the mother’s suffering isn’t until later in life and her son is more of the actual protagonist.
*White Oleander* by Janet Fitch is another example of a book I connected with that is more emotionally gritty.
*The Fifth Season* by N. K. Jemison also comes to mind because it doesn’t shy away from tough scenes.
Historical fictions are a favorite of mine as well even though I can’t think of an example that comes to mind right now, though I will edit if it pops up.
Basically I think I’m looking for a book where the girl/woman experiences suffering and powers through it somehow, but is still quite flawed. With world building and great characters and unique plots.
Help!!

If you liked Margaret Atwood’s book, you might enjoy another of her sci fi novel The Year of the Flood. Although, this is the second book to her MaddAddam trilogy, so you should read Oryx and Crake first, which the protagonist is a male.
