Does anyone have any suggestions for books that explore what it would be like if x instead of y happened at a certain point in history?
The Man in the High Castle is a famous example.
**Bonus points if it’s not about American/European history.**

Biography of X ended up on more best of year lists then I ever thought it would, I thought it was quite good, but others found it exceptional. The nice thing is the alternative history is not the main part of the story, or why the book is written. It is just a fascinating element of the story.
I would say also that To Paradise plays with this a bit too.
The Alteration by Martin Amis. Set in the Uk where the Protestant reformation never happened in Europe. The story of a choirboy who is going to be castrated for the glory of the Catholic Church
Fatherland by Robert Harris. An excellent murder mystery in Berlin where the Nazis have won the world war
You should try **The Years of Rice and Salt** by Kim Stanley Robinson. It’s a huge alternate history story that explores how the world could have changed through several centuries if the Black Death had completely wiped out the European population.
The twist is that in all those centuries the main characters are the same because they get reincarnated in different lives.
It’s an amazing book!
Plot Against America by Philip Roth
Charles Lindbergh wins the 1940 election against FDR.
