Raise your hand if you wanted to start a reading challenge this year but we’re already two weeks in and you haven’t even picked out a book to start the year with 🙋🏻‍♀️

Honestly though, anyone else in a reading slump and feeling a bit demoralized seeing the “I’m already done with x books in January!” posts?

General discussion for it if you’re also starting off 2024 in a funk as far as bookish things go.

(I personally think my own slump is induced from two consecutive years of going hard in reading challenges just for challenge sake, and adapting almost entirely to audiobooks which has shifted how I use my attention span for leisure reading)

    1. I do the reading challenge every year and every year I hate it because I stress out about the numbers and start looking for short books and angrily tweeting that reading challenges should be based on pages read and…

Anyway, point is, if I had the self-discipline not to care about that, that would be good. Instead, I mostly ignore other people’s numbers, and that seems slightly easier. After all, why would I be able to read 100 books a year with two kids and an elderly parent in the house? I’d be giving up way too much. 15 years ago, a book a week was fine. Now my only reading time is “while actively falling asleep” so the number will be lower. And that makes sense – I’m not giving up time with my daughters to read more books.

TLDR: If you can set your goal to encourage you to read appropriately for your amount of free time, it would help. But I get it if it’s hard to ignore what others are doing.

I’m in the opposite boat struggling with a 2024 book funk. I’ve read more this January (I’m halfway through a 3rd book, which is a lot for me for 2 weeks) than I usually do because of weather and sleep issues. It is not a good sign that I’m reading this much. I need to get out more and sleep better!
