My wife’s family does a fantasy football league every year, and this season was my first as a part of the family. We decided that instead of everyone having to pay up, the winner would get to pick a book for everyone else to read. I ended up winning, but I’m not sure what to suggest for our little book club. Everyone is a mixed bag of genres and authors they like, and I don’t want to make anyone read something they wouldn’t. Here’s an idea of everyone’s favorite titles and authors:
Me: Neil Gaiman, Joan Didion, plays and drama
My wife: The Silent Patient, everything by Lucinda Berry
My sister-in-law: Fourth Wing, Colleen Hoover
My brother-in-law: The Witcher, spy thrillers, self-help/memoir
My father-in-law: Will read just about anything, especially high-fantasy and sci-fi, loved Born a Crime and The Broken Earth series
My mother-in-law: mind-bending psychological thrillers, historical fiction
I can think of plenty of books that I enjoyed and think everyone else should read, but I wanted a new book, too. A general rule I’ve been given is nothing too explicitly violent (my sister-in-law can’t read The Chain now that she’s a new mother, for example, even though my wife raved about it). Another thing to consider is everyone has kids and jobs, so anything more than 400 pages might be pushing it. Is this possible?
