Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question to anyone but I can’t ask an eye doctor because I don’t have one at the moment and friends and family told me a mix of there opinions but is reading on your phone damaging to eyes? I don’t have a library in my local area and the nearest one is 2 hours away. I know the 20/20/20 tule of screen time, but I still worry if reading on my device will make my eyesight worse
BTW I have been wearing glasses and have been wearing them since I was 9.

You can look into blue light glasses that’s used when people are on computers a lot and such ! I read on my devices and personally aren’t worried bout my eyesight. But if you are and if you have your glasses prescription I’m sure you can look into getting a pair. Im told that can help
You could buy blue-filtering glasses, but it’s unnecessary with modern phones. Almost all of them will have an adaptive color feature called “night light” or “Night Shift” or similar. This reduces the amount of blue projected by the screen during the evening.
Thing is, blue light has nothing to do with your vision health. It is important for melatonin production and getting blue light too late in the day can make it hard to sleep. So, don’t even worry about blue light for the eye health part.
That said, reading on your phone screen would be no different than reading a piece of paper (book) in terms of strain on your eyeballs, as long as your screen wasn’t considerably brighter than the ambient lighting in the room.
If you can’t get your brightness dialed in, do white text on black. I’ve found this be much less tiring than black on white text. If you just can’t stand the look, try to use an off-white background. Apple’s iBooks has a sepia tone color scheme which didn’t give me any eye strain. Bonus if your phone has an LED screen as white on black should emit very little light as the black will truly be “off” and not emitting any light.
Ultimately. As long as you’re not pinpointing your pupils with bright light, it shouldn’t be any more strain than reading a book. But, reading too much and not resting your eye muscles by looking into the distance periodically can mess up your vision over time, back light or not. So just remember to take breaks and don’t binge-read.
