I read many genres. I love horror, mystery, thrillers, sci-fi, contemporary fiction, comics, fantasy, occasional romance. Just lots.
I’m looking for a really immersive, lengthy story.
Generally, I feel that a lot of those are fantasy or sci-fi, but if you have others, hit me with them. I’m looking to recreate that feeling of first reading LOTR or SOIAF or Harry Potter. The kind of book that you’re thinking about it a lot and can’t wait to get back to reading.
Thanks ✌🏻

The Expanse series, by James SA Corey
Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend!! It’s so good. I recommended it to a friend, and my friend got so invested in the story that immediately after finishing the first book they went to a bookstore to pick up copies of the second and third!
“Defy the Stars” by Claudia Gray is the first in a trilogy with some really great world building. The author also wrote some of the best Star Wars books in the new canon if that speaks to her credentials.
Speaking of which… if you like the old trilogy, her book “Lost Stars” is an excellent companion to those movies, about childhood friends and would-be lovers who grow up to fight on opposite sides during the original trilogy.
I’d recommend the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov. The world building is done very well, and the plot covers many years over many books. It’ll suck you in if its the type you’re looking for.
For sci-fi:
The Expanse by James SA Corey
Red Rising by Pierce Brown
Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman
For fantasy:
The First Law by Joe Abercrombie
The Dagger and the Coin or The Long Price Quartet by Daniel Abraham
The Farseer Trilogy (and the rest of the Elderlings series) by Robin Hobb
The Prince of Nothing and The Aspect-Emperor by R Scott Bakker
The Passage trilogy by Justin Cronin
Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons
If you want new school fantasy that I loved but never hear anyone talk about there’s Chronicles of the Unhewn Throne by Brian Staveley.
You might try Bernard Cornwell’s historical fiction for example the Last Kingdom and about 12 sequels.
Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion. I finished both in like 2 weeks. It’s ASoIaF levels of enthralling.
For SFF:
The Vorkosigan books by Lois McMaster Bujold. You can either start with Shards of Honor or The Warrior’s Apprentice.
The Discworld books by Terry Pratchett if you haven’t already read them.
The Queen’s Thief books by Megan Whalen Turner.
Historical fiction, but with genre appeal: The Master & Commander books by Patrick O’Brian.
The culture novels by Iain M. Banks are 10/10 classics
The Kushiel series by Jacqueline Carey starting with Kushiel’s Dart.
It’s only a trilogy but I really enjoyed it when I read it a few years ago:
– The Knife of never letting go
– The Ask and the answer
– Monsters of men
by Patrick Ness
Really good read and something different, let me know how you get it if you read them!
