I recently went into a history of science museum and all that gold and brass equipment was absolutely gorgeous. I was wondering if there were any historical fiction books about people who created those tools/equipment? Books about scientists/explorers/doctors using these are also fine, but I’d be especially interested in those involved in creating them. Actually, nonfiction recs also welcome. Thanks!

Professor Dowell’s Head by Alexander Belyaev is a novel about a surgeon who performs horrifying medical experiments. It was published in the 1920s, so the equipment is from that era.
