I’m planning to read books from authors all over the world (in English) this year, to broaden my literary horizons. What is your favorite book or author?
Do you have any preferences for genre or anything? Here are some of mine:
* Canadian: The authors Margaret Atwood (literary fiction, sci fi), Peter Watts (hard sci fi), Julie E. Czerneda (medium-soft sci fi), and Karl Schroeder (sci fi). Some books I recommend by these people are **The Blind Assassin**, the **Rifters series** (available free on Peter Watts’s website!), **A Thousand Words for Stranger**, and **Lady of Mazes**.
* Colombia: [Gabriel Garcia Marquez](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabriel_Garc%C3%ADa_M%C3%A1rquez), a renowned author who’s written a ton of stuff. I don’t know if there’s any best place to start, as I have only read **Chronicle of a Death Foretold** by him.
* India: **The Guide** by R. K. Narayan
* Polish: Stanislaw Lem, sci fi. My favourite book by him is **The Invincible**.
* Scottish: Iain Banks (literary fiction) and Iain M. Banks (the same guy, but sci fi). I recommend **The Player of Games**, a good intro to the Culture series, or **The Algebraist**, stand alone space opera.
