I like books that have a poetic sort of style to them (without being too convoluted) and books that use words in unconventional ways. I read On The Road by Jack Kerouac and the bit on the back put it perfectly, they said he uses the English language “like jazz”. Bonus points for deep themes and exciting storylines.

There are two old school writers who have that rare ability to write a story about ordinary people with prose so achingly beautiful it’s like reading a fine symphony.
They are two of my absolute favorite writers. She wrote In This House Of Brede and The Greenage Summer, among others. He wrote A Town Like Alice and The Trustee In The Toolroom. I’ve read all four and many of their other books many time. Shute in particular.
Yes they are written in a different time but they do not fail.
