John Kennedy Toile’s famous cult classic, I think isn’t as funny as people make it out to be. It’s a tragedy as much as it is a comedy.
Sure, the main character says some ridiculous and funny things, but his existence is tragic and not funny at all.
No one would be unemployed/ unemployable and living with their Mother at age 30 unless they had no choice. Especially in 1962 when expectations and standards for 30 year olds were waaaaayyy higher then they are now.
I think Ignatius has Asperger’s/ high functioning autism. He is very smart but seriously disabled and limited when it comes to fitting society’s expectations.
I had an uncle and grandmother who were kind of like ignatius and Irene. He lived with her all his life and had serious social concerns. My grandma was overbearing and anxious about him and always downplayed what he did that wasn’t “ normal”
Thoughts?

I think you’re right but he does briefly have a job.
