Hey guys. I’ve just read my first ever Ian McEwan book (shockingly): his latest one, *Lessons*. Absolutely loved it, and I’m excited to get cracking on his gigantic backlist.
My question is:
**Where should I start?**
I’m guessing *Atonement*, but all recommendations welcome! I’ve seen the film *Enduring Love*, but that’s literally it, in terms of my familiarity with his work up to this point.
Here’s some extra info about my kind of books, in case it helps with the recs:
* I pretty much solely like character-driven literary fiction, written in sparkling prose, and encompassing the big literary themes: love, loss, grief, ageing, etc. (no presh, ha)
* I couldn’t give a single fuck about plot
* I have a particular penchant for books that encompass a character’s whole life or thereabouts (hence loving *Lessons* so much)
* My favourite novelists include Michael Cunningham, Jeanette Winterson, and Anne Michaels
* Of all the novels I read last year, my favourites were *Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow,* *White Oleander,* and *The Great Believers*
Thanks so much!
