I’m moving far away for the first time – somewhere that gets colder this time of year than where I currently live – & I’m dealing with depression, dread, grief, & feeling lost, but also a sense of wanderlust & curiosity & confused ambition. I’m a writer & a history nerd, & I like classic lit – esp from 1600-1900, but up to mid-1900s is okay.
Some books/poetry/films to give an idea of what I like (these are all coming-of-age stories about teens & young adults): Candide, Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, A Season in Hell, Frankenstein, Villette, The Great Gatsby, The Bell Jar, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Titanic, Dead Poet’s Society, Kill Your Darlings, Withnail and I, etc. — all of which I relate to but none of them are as hopeful as I’m wanting (some contain v hopeful passages but aren’t enough). Jane Eyre is a favorite, and it’s hopeful, and would meet the mark, except its hopefulness is a bit too dependent on its romance, which I’m trying to avoid.
I’d like something introspective and inspiring. I’m looking for something to help me keep my head up during this time of transition.
I’m open to any literary suggestions — book/stageplay/screenplay/essay/poetry/prose/etc.
