‘Devil in the White City’ is one of my favorites I’ve read, and best fits the type of book I’m looking for. I see there are others by Erik Larson but didn’t know if they were as good as DiWC.

I was intrigued with learning the historical context of the preparing for the world fair just as much if not more than the serial killer story arc.

I’m basically seeking a well researched perspective on a fascinating time in history, delivered in a story format surrounding the accounting of events.

I just finished ‘River of Doubt’ for example, and enjoy that format.

‘Island of the Lost’ was another favorite in a similar vein.

I have ‘The Tiger’ and ‘Endurance’ (about Shackleton) on my dresser, but am still looking at options.

‘The Johnstown Flood’ and ‘Empire of the Summer Moon’ are also possibilities that others have mentioned.

Any books that really transported you back in time and immersed you in an unknown era? There’s something truly fascinating about this style when it’s done right, that leaves you with both a good story and an expanded perspective of history.
