I love these in fiction. It eeks me out like cryptid material. The first time I was introduced to something like this was an overt example in *A Series of Unfortunate Events* where, while the heroes are riding a deep sea submarine, the radar picks up somethng that shows up on the sonar screen literally looking like a question mark, and the submarine’s captain refuses to elaborate on what it is.These little teases to something never meant to be known creep me out in ways I really enjoy, and I’d like to hear if anyone here has their own favourite examples from elsewhere.

There are many mysterious happenings in Gene Wolf’s “The Book of the New Sun” that will never be answered.
I just finished Picnic at Hanging Rock. There’s a movie too.
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, though it’s a bit lacking in creepy vibes (at least, it was for me).
