I was really enjoying this book. I was deeply invested in finding out what happened in the woods in the 80s, I figured out who the modern culprit was pretty quick but I didn’t know why or how and was willing to go along to find out. I was here for it, even as Ryan became less and less likeable. I got 12 hours into the audiobook. 12 HOURS! Then, I hit chapter 16. A big thing happened that ruined my favorite part of the book, and my gut instinct told me to check a synopsis because it seemed that we had jumped the shark, at which point I discovered the book wasn’t worth finishing. The ending straight up sucks across the board. This book was a miserably disappointing exercise in making oneself miserable and I’m only mad I was conned as long as I was.

Also, the author is an American living in Ireland, you’d think she’d have a better handle on Irish culture, people and dialogue. (Not to mention the narrator. The English narrator was a fine narrator, for a story not set in Ireland! Could they not have chosen a narrator who could at least try to do a passable Irish accent, since every character except Ryan HAS an Irish accent??)

This book is so highly rated, and I feel like I’m in an alternate reality because I haven’t hated a book so fiercely in years.
