Hi! I’ve just finished reading “Talking Heads” by Alan Bennett, a collection of monologues written for tv that portray different perspectives on the “British way of life”, and I’d like to read more stories like that – about ordinary life and its struggles and tragedies, people’s weird little secrets and flaws, all narrated with an observational spirit and humour (and, why not, some poignancy). In particular, I’m looking for books set during the 1980s (but if you have any extra recommendations for something set in the 70s or 90s that’s welcome as well!).
Some more titles I’ve read so far off the top of my head are “Shuggie Bain” by Douglas Stuart, “What a carve up!” by Jonathan Coe, “The Black Album” bu Hanif Kureishi, “White Teeth” by Zadie Smith and “Lady in the van” by Alan Bennett.
Thanks in advance!
