2024 is a year that I am focusing on the classics or other very highly acclaimed literature. My first read of the year was A Tale of Two Cities.

Wow, what a book. I had read Great Expectations when I was in high school and A Christmas Carol a few years ago. I had enjoyed both of those, but this one absolutely blew them both away. It was a bit of slow going through the first 1/3 of the book. Normally I wouldn’t describe many classics as “page turners”, but I had trouble putting this one down as the climax in Paris began to take shape.

I finished it last night and haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. The ending crushed me, and if a book can do that it’s going to instantly become a favorite. I don’t see this book mentioned frequently when Dickens comes up though, which really surprises me. Would love to hear anyone else’s thoughts or suggestions regarding further reading.

If you like Dickens, you will like George Eliot. *Middlemarch* and *Silas Marner* are good starting points.
