I’m 13 and I want to become a writer, but in my entire life I’ve only read 4-5 books. But if I want to become a normal writer according to the public, I need to read. The only books that captivated me were Animal Farm, Flowers for Algernon, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Dreams Come To Life (Bendy). And no, I don’t particularly like fantasy, because it brings my disappointment in the world and in myself to the maximum level (I hate Harry Potter!) What do you suggest?

*The Shadow of the Wind* is an amazing book about a boy who reads a rare book and tracks down the author by following clues in the lives of the people his life brushed against. It’s a beautiful, sad and happy book.
*All Quiet on the Western Front* (English version of the title) is a book from the perspective of a German soldier during WW1. It was one of my most re-read books when I was your age. It’s beautiful and sad, like the other book I mentioned. I wouldn’t call it happy, but some moments will have you smiling.
I think my top recs for you are [A Tree Grows in Brooklyn](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/dc5de2f5-b132-4c4c-8e49-8bf46005d5da) by Betty Smith and [Holes](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/8c4608f2-106f-428d-b898-4657bab67b9a) by Louis Sachar. Both are excellent and very engaging!
