Hi all!
So, disclaimer. I’m an autistic adult who very intensely enjoys the same few things. But I’m looking to branch out – the things I like have some common themes but I’m not sure how to put it into words.
They’re richly atmospheric adult fantasy stories, slow-paced and meandering, with usually one central quest and fantastical creatures (bonus points for classics like unicorns, dragons, fairies, wizards, etc etc). Definitely not YA, or at least just written for general audiences. And maybe some romance too.
Maybe something Arthurian or classic medieval?
Here are some media I’ve found scratched this itch:
BOOKS:
Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkein
The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle (and other Beagle stories)
Watership Down by Richard Adams
Tales from Watership Down by Richard Adams
Warriors Cats series (not looking for Juv fiction, but I did enjoy the sprawling world and hierarchical systems here)
Dragon Age series
Dark Crystal comics
TV SHOWS/MOVIES:
The Hobbit (animated)
LOTR Trilogy
Star Wars (1-6)
The Last Unicorn
Sleeping Beauty
Dark Crystal
Labyrinth
My Little Pony (4th Generation)
Legend
Adventure Time
Neverending Story
GAMES:
The Legend of Zelda (Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword)
Elden Ring
The Elder Scrolls (Morrowind, Oblivion)
Baldur’s Gate (1-3; Dark Alliance)
Dragon Age (Origins, 2)
MUSIC/OTHER:
Dungeon Synth
Vermis I zine by Plastiboo
I’m not really looking for more D&D/action-packed adventures like Dragon Age or Baldur’s Gate, more to the atmospheric/slow style of The Last Unicorn, Zelda, and LOTR specifically. Pure action and politics tends to turn me off for the most part, but I don’t just want pure fluff (Legends & Lattes comes to mind).
I hope this isn’t too vague, I know I don’t have a ton of examples. Thanks so much in advance!!
