I love stories where the protagonists are either outcasts or generally unhappy and end up turning to some sort of monstrous entity as a last resort!
Addie Larue, Coraline, and Pan’s Labyrinth are great examples too: all involve girls turning to some kind of monster as a means of escaping the misery of their everyday lives. Most of them come to regret this decision but not so in Pan’s Labyrinth!
I’m ok with the tone being either lighthearted or dark, so long as that story element is there 🙂
